Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and Mundelein Police Officers de-escalated a tense situation involving a man armed with a knife and threatening to harm his neighbors Tuesday.
Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said deputies were dispatched to the 26200 block of North Route 83 in unincorporated Lake County near Mundelein for a report of a man who went to a neighbor’s house, began shouting, then started stabbing the neighbor’s door with a knife at 9:55 a.m. on June 11.
When sheriff’s deputies arrived, the man who was later identified as Luis Maganda-Chino, 40, retreated into his home in the same block, Covelli said.
Mundelein Police officers arrived to assist with the situation, then provided a Spanish translator as Maganda-Chino primarily spoke Spanish, Covelli said.
Covelli said sheriff’s deputies and Mundelein Police officers communicated with Maganda-Chino for over an hour, eventually convincing him to leave his home and surrender.
Maganda-Chino was taken into custody without further incident, Covelli said.
Sheriff’s Deputies seized several knives after taking Maganda-Chino into custody, Covelli said.
Maganda-Chino also had an active arrest warrant for violating an order of protection, Covelli said.
In addition to the arrest warrant, Maganda-Chino was charged with aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest, Covelli said.
Maganda-Chino was transported to the Lake County Jail, Covelli said, where he remains held pending an appearance in Lake County First Appearance Court.
“Yet again, our staff utilized patience, time, and de-escalation techniques to bring a violent situation to a safe resolution, without the need to use force,” Sheriff John Idleburg said.
“Great job to everyone involved in this incident, from our sheriff’s emergency telecommunicators to our deputies who responded. Thank you to Mundelein Police Department for their response and assistance.”
